New Zealand's Campbell Grayson recovered from a blood injury in the fifth game to overcome top seeded Malaysian Nafiizwan Adnan in a superb final to the Victorian Open squash tournament in Melbourne on Sunday. Grayson was down 4-6 in the fifth when he was hit in the nose by Adnan's elbow and was forced to take a 20-minute break to stop the bleeding. But when he returned he looked the fresher of the two players as he took seven of the next nine points to win the final 11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8.
"Wan's (Adnan) a really strong guy and we were both taking up space in the middle – it was very physical," Grayson said afterwards. "It wasn't a great time for it to happen."
It was the second seeded Grayson's fourth title on the men's tour and his first since May 2011, and should see him break back into the top 50 when the new rankings are released at the end of the month.
Earlier unseeded Korean Song Sun-Mi won the biggest title of her career when she overcame New Zealand's Amanda Landers-Murphy in straight games.
Song has been in impressive form all tournament and she dominated the fifth seeded Landers-Murphy in the final to win 12-10, 11-9, 11-7.
The Korean was once ranked as high as 42 in the world but is only just coming back after a lengthy injury break.
It was her second win on the women's tour, with the other also coming in Australia, at the 2010 NSW Open in Sydney.
She now heads to Hobart for the Tasmanian Open, where she will take on Melbourne's Nicole Stoneham in the first round.
