The four Canadians in the singles main draw at Wimbledon were in action on Tuesday at the All-England Club as Stéphanie Dubois, Vasek Pospisil, Milos Raonic and Aleksandra Wozniak took to the court for their first round matches.
On the women's side, Wozniak went up against Russian Vera Dushevina, ranked no. 94 on the WTA rankings. The two players had met once before on grass in 2009 and Wozniak dominated her opponent 6-1, 6-0. Dushevina proved to be tougher competition on Tuesday, but Wozniak still came away with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
"I was leading 6-2, 4-1 and she (Dushevina) started playing better, but I didn't allow her to get back into match and I am happy that I didn't have to play a third set," Wozniak said after the match.
In the second round on Thursday, Wozniak will face China's Jie Zheng who knocked out Dubois 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a tightly contested encounter in which Dubois held a 6-4, 4-2 lead against the tournament's no. 25 seed. Wozniak and Zheng will meet in a second consecutive Grand Slam after playing eachother in the second round at Roland-Garros a few weeks ago, a match which Wozniak won 6-2, 6-4.
On the men's side, Raonic played his first match at Wimbledon since suffering a hip injury in the second round last year on the grass courts in London. The no. 21 seed took on Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, ranked no. 45 in the world. Raonic seemed to be on his way to victory, but the rain suspended play for the day as he was about to serve for the match at 6-4, 6-4, 5-4. The match will be completed on Wednesday. For his part, Pospisil, who recently celebrated his 22nd birthday, fell in four sets to American Sam Querrey 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3 et 6-4.
