Andy Roddick claimed the AEGON International men's singles title in convincing fashion on Saturday, beating defending champion Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-2 to claim his first tournament trophy for 16 months. Roddick powered through the final in one hour and 12-minutes to claim his 31st career title and continue his record of winning at least one ATP World Tour title per year for the past 12 years.
Roddick said the AEGON International had provided him with the perfect warm-up ahead of Wimbledon. "I feel really good," said the former world No.1. "My returns this week were close to as well as I have (returned).
"I started off not serving great and then made an adjustment. I think I served 90 percent in the second set, which is pretty strong number. I just (have to) try to maintain this form going into Wimbledon."
The women's singles final was a much tighter affair, world No. 8 Angelique Kerber dominating in the opening set before world No. 59 Tamira Paszek stormed back to claim the title. The closely fought contest lasted two hours and 45-minutes, with Paszek recovering from a break down in the third set and saving five match points to take the 2012 AEGON International women's singles trophy 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
Paszek said she never gave up. "I always knew I'm a fighter, I always believe in myself. It's been one of the best (weeks). Winning a title, everything has fit together. It was a pleasure to have all my family here, my coach here," said Paszek, who was watched by her father and Eastbourne-based Godparents.
"It makes it really special to win, first of all, the title on grass, one of my favourite surfaces, and secondly, in front of the family."
The Ladies' Doubles final between Liezel Huber & Lisa Raymond, Nuria Llagostera Vives & Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez ended prematurely with Huber and Raymond retiring after dropping the first set 4-6, Huber suffering a thigh strain.
