Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Netherlands fullback Jetro Willems, this after the 18-year old proved to be one of the few positives in an otherwise disastrous Euro 2012 campaign for Bert van Marwijk's Dutch side. Netherlands, one of the pre-tournament favourites for the European Championships, exited the competition after the group stages, losing each of their three games against Denmark, Germany and Portugal.

Willems however was one of the side's brighter performers, starting each of those three games and providing good support both in offence and defence.

Known for his burst of pace and technical ability, the teenager was signed by PSV only last summer, and made 29 appearances for the side in his debut season, scoring once to help the Eredivisie side come third in last season's domestic campaign.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed enough by the youngster's performances to have recommended assistant manager Mike Phelan to scout him when the new season gets underway, with the possibility of United making a move for him in the following summer.

The Red Devils are currently looking at possible players to bring in at left-back following Patrice Evra's drastic decline in form in the last two seasons.
