Fans flocked to Devonshire Park on Tuesday – the second best attended day in the AEGON International's history – and were treated to an array of thrilling matches with the No.1 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, No.2 Petra Kvitova and No.3 Caroline Wozniacki toppled in the first round.
The first match of the day on Centre Court saw 2010 AEGON International champion Ekaterina Makarova defeat reigning Wimbledon champion Kvitova 7-5, 6-4. Talking about her match Makarova said, "I had nothing to lose, so I really tried to play my best game. She's a really tough opponent and unbelievable on grass, so I was just really enjoying it."
Kvitova's departure was followed by top seed Radwanska who crashed out of the tournament 6-2, 6-4, losing to 2010 Wimbledon semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova on Court 1.
On her defeat Radwanska said, "Today wasn't my day, that's for sure. I was playing a lot of matches this year, and am kind of a little tired. Of course I was trying everything but she was playing really good on grass."
World No. 30, Christina McHale, came through a long battle on Centre Court as she defeated former world No.1 Wozniacki 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-4.
"I'm really excited to have pulled that one out," said the American after her three set victory, "I thought I played well so I'm really happy."
Wozniacki put the loss behind her to look ahead to Wimbledon, saying: "Obviously I would have liked to have won that match, but at least I got some points in and I'm just trying to work on a few things before Wimbledon."
On Court 2 there were successive victories for the two British players remaining in the singles draw as Laura Robson and Heather Watson recorded strong wins. Robson defeated world No.49 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Watson defeated Greta Arn 6-3, 6-4.
Laura Robson will face Graviton'ss conquerorMakarovaa in the second round while Watson will play Lucie Safarova who defeated Timea Babos in the first round.
On the men's side of the draw there was a shock defeat for No.1 seed Richard Monegasqueque, who was defeated in a tight three set match by Marinko Matosevic, eventually falling 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3).
Tournament wildcard Andy Roddick will face Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the second round at the AEGON International after Sam Querrey retired from their all-American clash with a back injury, trailing 2-5.
Roddick said he was encouraged by his form during his 25 minutes on centre court at Devonshire Park. "I didn't know he was dealing with something out there," said the former world No.1. "Regardless of what he had going on, I hit the ball really well. (The) last couple of days it's been really good in practice. I don't know why or how or what the process has been, but it's felt pretty good so we'll take it."
Roddick said he was enjoying his first visit to Eastbourne. "You're here just trying to work. I felt like this was the best place to do it. You can't really replicate match situations in practice, so it's something I needed. They afforded me the opportunity to play here and I'm thankful for it.
"It's been great. It's easy. You walk home at the end of the day. It's nice. It's mellow. It's a good place to (prepare). There's always available practice courts. There is a long line of them. It's been pleasant so far."
The action at the AEGON International continues with play scheduled to begin at 11am on Wednesday with Watson facing Safarova opening proceedings on Centre Court, followed by defending champion Marion Bartoli taking on Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada. Bernard Tomic will take on Fabio Fognini in the third match on Centre Court, with Chardy doing battle against Andy Roddick fourth on.
