The highly anticipated return leg of the fixture between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Deccan Chargers at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata was called off due to heavy thunder showers even before the coin was tossed this evening.
Although the rain lasted only for a short duration, the intensity of it had parts of the ground badly water-logged, making it hard for the groundsmen to get the ground ready in time for even a 5 over game to be played.
There was also damage to one of the stands due to these thunder showers which caused havoc among the spectators.
The washout means that the Deccan Chargers, who had lost all 5 of their matches thus far this season, finally earned their first points of IPL Season 5. While not an ideal outcome, it will be welcome relief to the Chargers to have broken their duck.
While no result is a given, Kolkata would have fancied their chances of picking up maximum points from their home game and will no doubt see this result as a point dropped. The other interesting element of splitting points of course is that it throws the table open with net run rate no longer relevant for Kolkata and Deccan unless the two teams are tied at a later stage in a chase for a play-off spot.
