A host of WWE Hall of Famers were present in the arena for a special ‘old school’ edition of SmackDown, and vintage Hall of Fame ring announcer ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund started off the night by welcoming to the ring the World Heavyweight Champion, Sheamus. Sheamus issued a public apology to referee Chad Patton for kicking him in the head last week, but John Lauranitis cut him off. The new General Manager made him apologize once again and put the champion on probation, with the warning that if Sheamus touches another referee he would be fired and slapped a fine of $500000. And as a final punishment, Lauranitis set the main event of the night as Alberto Del Rio and Daniel Bryan against the team of Sheamus and Gene Okerlund.
Before facing CM Punk in a No Holds Barred match for the WWE Championship on Raw next week, Mark Henry faced Randy Orton in a singles match on SmackDown. Orton tried to take Henry down with a series of punches, but Henry fought back with headbutts and a clothesline in a corner. Henry got a two-count off an powerslam and a body splash. Orton rolled away from another splash and bounced off the ropes for a clothsline. Orton took Henry off his vertical base with kicks to the knee and a DDT. Henry shoved Orton outside the ring, but ran into the ringpost as Orton stepped out of a tackle. Before Orton could capitalize, Kane appeared on the TitanTron with ‘Cowboy’ Bob Orton, Randy’s father, which made Orton run backstage, ending the match via count-out. Orton found his father sprawled on the floor, and was blindsided by Kane with a lead pipe. Kane taunted Orton, calling him a ‘sucker for family reunions’ before smirking away.
Ryback was up against a local performer once again, with similar results. Ryback took his opponent down with a strong clothesline and took him out with a single leg muscle buster for the victory. Also, Heath Slater and Tyson Kidd were accompanied by ‘Mouth of the South’ Jimmy Hart as they teamed up to take on the Usos, with Hardcore Legend Mick Foley at commentary. Tyson and Slater failed to co-exist as a team, and not before long Slater got hit with a top-rope splash combo by the Usos, allowing Jimmy Uso to pick up the victory. After the match, Foley got really frustrated at having to hear Jimmy Hart yet again, and locked in the Mandible Claw on the veteran, leaving him writhing in pain at ringside.
‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper hosted his famous talkshow Piper’s Pit on SmackDown after eight years, and his guest was the former World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan. Bryan once again blamed AJ for his 18-second loss to Sheamus at WrestleMania, and announced that John Lauranitis had granted him his rematch at Extreme Rules, where he will face Sheamus in a 2 out of 3 falls match, where Sheamus could not win by ‘fluke’. Piper decided to spice things up by calling out AJ, who still maintained that Bryan was a ‘good person’ and the loss was entirely her fault. Piper reminded AJ of how Bryan had been using her, but AJ would have none of it. Finally Bryan got tired of the talking and sent AJ backstage, and when Piper tried to warn him against using women, he slapped the Hall of Famer across the face and ran out of the ring.
The Great Khali teamed up with Natalya and Alicia Fox to take on the team of Drew McIntyre and the Bella twins. McIntyre started off the match with the Great Khali, but after receiving a couple of hard chops to the chest, screamed that he was better than this and tagged out. Alicia tagged herself in and rolled Brie Bella up for the pin-fall victory. After the match, another Hall of Famer, Mae Young stepped into the ring and celebrated with the three victors.
Hunico rode in with his assistant Camacho as he faced ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan in a singles contest. Duggan took Hunico down with a tackle, but Camacho got in his face. Duggan called for backup, and Sgt. Slaughter ran in with a 2x4. Slaughter threw Duggan’s favourite weapon inside the ring and Duggan smacked Hunico in the face with it. Duggan lost the match via disqualification, but stood tall over his adversary and engaged in some old-school celebration with Sgt. Slaughter, who took the moment to decapitate Hunico with the Cobra Clutch.
Cody Rhodes stepped in the ring and labeled the ‘blast from the past’ edition of SmackDown was a waste of time, as everyone should look forward to the future, which was him becoming champion once again. Cody promised the WWE Universe that Big Show would never get within ‘a lucky punch’s distance’ within him, but was shocked when his father, Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes came out to the ring to a standing ovation. Dusty warned his son against ‘further poking the bear’, and Big Show added fuel to the fire by coming out and showing a clip of Cody putting on lip gloss. Cody left the ring embarrassed as his father seemed to be enjoying the show.
As scheduled, World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus teamed up with ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund to take on Alberto Del Rio and Daniel Bryan. Bryan and Del Rio kept Sheamus grounded as they tagged in and out, but Sheamus fought back momentarily by dropping Bryan with a back body drop and knocking del Rio off the apron. Sheamus went for the Brogue Kick but Bryan ducked and threw him outside to the floor. Del Rio hit Sheamus with an Enzuigiri outside the ring, and then he and Bryan cornered Mean Gene. At this moment, Roddy Piper led Sgt. Slaughter, Jim Duggan, Jimmy Hart and Bob Orton to the ring, distracting Bryan long enough for Sheamus to hit the Brogue Kick and pick up the victory.
After the match, Del Rio wasted no time in scampering out of the arena, and all the old-timers present in the ring hit Ricardo Rodriguez with their finishing moves and celebrated with Gene and Sheamus, leaving the SmackDown fans in a state of pure ecstasy.
With the World Heavyweight Championship match set for Extreme Rules, how will Daniel Bryan prepare himself for his big rematch? And where does Alberto Del Rio fit into the picture? We will find out in the upcoming weeks on SmackDown.
