Arsene Wenger has begun his quest to lead Arsenal to challenge for major trophies next season with the reported capture of German international Lukas Podolski. After another trophy-less season at the Emirates, Wenger is perhaps already preparing a team to challenge the two Manchester clubs next season. Podolski, who still has a year left on his contract with German club FC Koln will join the Gunners on a five year deal for a reported fee of £10 million and will pocket a cool £80,000 per week according to a report in 'The Daily Mirror'.

The Emirates faithful will be hoping this will be the beginning of many arrivals at a club which is waiting for its first major trophy since their FA Cup win against Manchester United way back in 2005. Poland born Podolski is having a second stint with FC Koln, a club he was at since the age of 10. Podolski was being tracked by Arsenal for a couple of seasons now, right since he had re-joined FC Koln in 2009 after spending three seasons with Bayern Munich. The German international has scored 32 times in his 81 appearances for the club during this second stint.

It is being reported that Podolski wanted the deal to be finalised even before the start of the transfer window so that he could fully concentrate on the European Championships. Even Arsene Wenger has stated that he wants to complete this year's transactions early. Podolski who can be deployed both as a winger and as a striker, will most probably have to fight for a place in the starting XI with the likes of Gervinho, Walcott and the impressive Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all competing for wide berths.
