In the first of two second round matches played on Wednesday evening, top seed and Australian Open finalist Maria Sharapova began her campaign at the Open GDF SUEZ in Paris (she had received a bye in the first round) with a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 victory in 69 minutes over world no.44 Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa.

The Russian diva didn't look to be suffering from any post Fed-Cup fatigue as she converted 6 out of 10 breakpoint opportunities and served well enough to book a smooth passage into the next round.

In the other second round match, world no 21 and sixth seed Julia Goerges overcame a slump at the start of the second set to eventually prevail over world no 31 Petra Cetkovska 6-1, 6-4 in 66 minutes.

In the afternoon session, seventh seed Roberta Vinci survived 2 gruelling sets over the upcoming 20 year old Romanian Simona Halep while it was curtains for the eighth seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues. The Spanish lady was ousted by local wild card Pauline Parmentier 2-6, 6-3m 6-3 in 2 hours and 29 minutes.

On Thursday, the second seed and crowd favourite Marion Bartoli will begin her quest for the title as she takes on Croatian Petra Martic.
