Tough tackling New Zealand international Ryan Nelsen has finally completed his long awaited move to Premier League title challengers Tottenham Hotspur after Blackburn consented to cancelling the 34-year old's contract, ending his 7 year stay at the Lancashire club. Nelsen's agent shared that the veteran has inked a 6 month contract with the London club, having the option of extending it for another year.
While Ryan is not exactly expected to get a lot of first team action at Spurs, chances are he will provide cover in a troublesome area of the pitch for Harry Redknapp. Center-backs at Tottenham tend to have a strong rotation policy, subject to availability through injury. With Ledley King, Michael Dawson and William Gallas regularly unavailable, Younes Kaboul is the only consistent performer in that role and tends to play alongside any of the above three who is fit.
Tottenham have also loaned their best young center-back in Sebastien Bassong to Wolves till the end of the season, instead looking at adding experience to the squad in the title run-in. Interestingly though Nelsen himself has had an injury plagued season, and though his quality is not in any doubt, it will be interesting to see how much time he spends on the pitch versus the treatment table.
In an interview with New Zealand's 3News, Nelsen shared that his motivation for the move resided in the opportunity to win something in England before leaving the country for the United States. "Medals, trophies are things you strive for. Blackburn got to five semis and never made a final, so it's very exciting, " said the former Kiwi captain.
Nelsen started his career in the United States with DC United, and reportedly has an open offer from an American club to be Player-Coach. He is hoping though that he can get his hands on some silverware before he takes that up.
