Fulham have played some decent football this season. However, a lot of the credit for them being well clear of the relegation zone would undoubtedly go to Clint Dempsey. The American has had a phenomenal season so far and has scored a whopping 15 goals in 30 appearances for the Cottagers.

Therefore it is only natural that talks of a transfer begin to do the rounds. However, what has got the rumour mills abuzz this time are the player’s comments about his desire to play in the Champions League. Speaking to the Metro, Dempsey stated, “You should never get content. I want to play in the Champions League. Nobody thought I would get this far. I want to go as far as I can.”

The aforementioned daily suggests that the comments could spark an interest from Arsenal, who were believed to be keen on the player in the summer. QPR too have been touted with a move, although if Champions League is what Dempsey aspires for, then a move to the Emirates would make more sense.

Arsenal could do with a player like Dempsey, who has the tendency to come up with goals in crucial matches. In recent weeks the Gunners have been lacking a cutting edge, something that has seen them lose three consecutive Premier League matches. What will also be beneficial for the Gunners will be Dempsey’s versatility as the Amercian is capable of playing as a striker, attacking midfielder or even a winger. What undoubtedly gives Arsenal an edge as far as this transfer is concerned is the fact that the player will be willing to make the move and will not have to relocate as like Fulham, the Gunners too are based in London. Dempsey will in fact also be available for selection in the Champions League as he is not cup tied despite having featured for Fulham in the Europa League.

However, there are quite a few roadblocks to this move, especially if the Gunners want an immediate deal. Firstly Fulham are unlikely to want to sell one of their most influential players and will undoubtedly demand a relatively high fee for him. Secondly, Wenger has time and again hesitated to buy older players and at 28-years old age, Dempsey might not fit into his long term plans.

However, the fans would certainly feel that given the form Dempsey is in, he could be just the player to reinvigorate Arsenal’s fledgling campaign and that coupled with the fact that Wenger is under great pressure at the moment might just persuade the Gunners to see a deal through.
