The Indo - Russian dou of Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina crashed out of the women's doubles event at the 2012 Australian Open on wednesday, losing their quarter-final to the all-Russian pairing of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva in three tight sets.
Zvonareva and Kuznestova won a break-riddled opening set 7-4 in a tiebreak with neither team able to press home their advantage. Mirza and Vesnina, the no.6 seeds, bounced back well to take the second set 6-2 and jumped to a 3-1 lead in the decider only for the Russians to come storming back in the contest.
Out of the four women on court today, Elena Vesnina played arguably the best tennis, yet sadly it was her serve that was broken in what proved to be the final game of the match as she served at 4-5 down in the third set. Zvonareva and Kuznetsova raced to 0-40 on the Vesnina serve and though the seeded duo saved those three match points and one more, they were unable to deny the scratch pairing on the fifth attempt as they booked a spot in the final.
