In a major setback, Pune FC striker Jeje Lalpekhlua will be out of action for eight weeks after injuring his left knee. The 21-year-old suffered a strained ligament after colliding with Air-India goalkeeper Pawan Kumar in the second half of an I-league Round-16 encounter in Pune last weekend.

Pune FC physio Tariq Shaikh explained, "The collision was strong and Jeje jerked his knee on the medial side and needed expert opinion."

Fact is the injury is a first of its kind to the Mizoram player since the time he signed up for Pune FC in 2007 as their first ever signing.

Consultation with specialist Dr. Anant Joshi, revealed total medication, rest and rehab for the next 21 days after the MRI report revealed a grade 2/3 injury to MCL (medial collateral ligament).

Tariq added, "A review shall be done after the three week period and based on that a necessary rehab schedule will be drawn up."

"The follow-up will give us the clarity for how long Jeje will be out."

The MRI report advised non-weight bearing with crutches for the period.

A disappointed Jeje added, "It's very disappointing. As a player, injury and the thought of being out of action is the worst thing to think of... but then I have to deal with it. I am eager and praying to get back as soon as possible."

While the incident was unfortunate wherein the 'keeper went for Jeje and the referee gave the foul against the striker, Pune FC Head Operations said, "We don't want to rush Jeje into action. All necessary checks will be done and thereafter rehab and only then when he is ready we would want him to get back. But till that time Jeje will need a lot of rest."

"It's been a tough season. And I am hoping Jeje recovery is good and he gets back stronger and to where he was."

As a result, of the injury Pune FC will lose Jeje's services for at least four I-league rounds against Shillong Lajong (January 28; at Shillong), Sporting Clube de Goa (February 1; at Goa), Dempo SC (February 5; at Pune) and Prayan United SC (February 12; at Pune) before the league takes a break owing to India's campaign in the AFC Challenge Cup.

Coach Derrick Pereira added, "It's a sad happening as he forms an integral part of the teams' starting line-up. Jeje is a strong lad and recovery will be quicker I am sure."

So far Jeje has accounted for five Pune FC goals and is the squad's second top scorer so far in the league.
