Barcelona and Spain were dealt a massive blow on Thursday after David Villa fractured his leg during the Club World Cup semi-final against Al-Sadd in Japan. The striker suffered the injury following an awkward tackle in the first half and had to be stretchered off. Scans lateral revealed that he had broken the tibia in his left leg and is now expected to be out of action for up to six months. Barcelona managed to win 4-0 despite the striker's absence and will now face Santos in the final.

Pep Guardiola was understandably upset at losing his striker to a serious injury, saying "David has fractured his leg and will return to Barcelona for an operation as soon as possible. We are all very sad for him. He's a charming personality and it's a massive blow for the team. He will be out for a long time: I don't know how long but it takes a long time to return after a break like this. All the players are very worried about David. We hope he will return as soon as possible. Our thoughts are with him and we will have to win the Club World Cup without him."

Interestingly, Villa had been all-over the back pages in England recently, with reports claiming that Chelsea were interested in bringing the former Valencia hit-man to Stamford Bridge. But Guardiola strongly denied those rumours, claiming that the 30 year-old was still a part of his plans. Villa has been struggling with a shin problem for a few weeks now, with a fissure in his tibia reported to be the cause.

The loss of the star striker will hit the National team harder, ahead of the Euro Championships next summer. Villa is Spain's top-scorer and has been a vital clog in their European and World Cup winning squads of the past four years. Barcelona have the luxury of looking towards the likes of Lionel Messi, Pedro and Alexis Sanchez to share the goal burden in his absence. But Spain are short-changed in the striker's department, what with Fernando Torres' continued struggles and Fernando Llorente offering the only other major goal-threat. Though Poland/Ukraine 2012 is still six months away, Villa's participation in it seems unlikely at the moment.
