Australian tennis great and former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash will lead the Junior Davis Cup team at the world final in Mexico, commencing this week. This role continues Cash’s involvement with top Australian junior players, following his work during training blocks at both the AIS in Canberra and the claycourt training base in Barcelona over the past few years.

Cash will lead the Junior Davis Cup squad of Nick Kyrgios (ACT), Jay Andrijic (NSW), Bradley Mousley (SA) and Daniel Guccione (Vic). Fifteen-year-old Wimbledon Junior champion Ashleigh Barty (Qld) will head up the Junior Fed Cup team, along with Belinda Woolcock (Vic), Brooke Rischbieth (SA) and captain Ken Richardson.

Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is a prestigious international team event for boys and girls aged 16 and under.

Sixteen boys’ and 16 girls’ teams from a total of 23 countries have fought their way through regional qualifying for a chance to compete at the world final in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, from 27 September.

The event begins with a round-robin competition, with four groups of four teams. The winner of each group qualifies for the knockout semifinals, with remaining nations playing off for final positions.

Australia has won Junior Davis Cup twice in the past five years.

AIS Coach Ray Ruffels led the 2009 champion team of Jason Kubler, Luke Saville and Joey Swaysland. In 2007 Bernard Tomic, Mark Verryth and Alex Sanders won for Australia, completing an historic double win alongside the champion Junior Fed Cup team of Sally Peers, Isabella Holland and Olivia Rogowska.

Jason Kubler, Luke Saville, Ashleigh Barty and Belinda Woolcock are all members of the AIS Pro Tour program.
