The draw for the 2012 edition of the Davis Cup were announced on Wednesday in Bangkok. With that the matches scheduled for the World Group and Zone Groups I and II have been decided. Only the draw for Americas Zone Group II remains, which shall be decided following the completion of the 2011 Americas Zone Group I tie between Mexico and Columbia on 28-30 October.
As per each year, 16 countries have been drawn in the World Group play-off. Top seeds and current finalists Spain will face Kazakhstan the opening round. The other finalist in this year’s tournament Argentina have been handed a tough outing against Germany in Round 1.
Serbia, who were shown the door by a Juan Martin Del Potro inspired Argentina, will take on Sweden in their opening tie, while France have been drawn against Canada . Switzerland, who knocked out Australia in the playoff thanks to some good performances by Roger Federer, will face the challenge of USA.
India had a lacklustre outing against Japan in the World Group playoff where they lost 4-1 in Tokyo, and have received a first round bye in the Asia/Oceania Group I. They will now await the winner of the contest between New Zealand and Uzbekistan in the 2nd round.
The first round of the 16-nation World Group will be held on 10-12 February, with the quarterfinals taking place on 6-8 April. The semifinals and World Group play-offs will be held on 14-16 September, and the World Group Final on 16-18 November.
