Arsenal have snapped up Ivorian impresario Gervinho for an undisclosed fee rumoured to be in the region of £11 million. The deal represents Arsene Wenger’s first serious business this close season. Amidst all the negative press and purported doom created around (the present standing of) Arsenal and with Wenger having been thwarted with his pursuit of landing Velez ace Ricky Alvarez who is Inter Milan bound, the confirmation of the signing would come as welcome relief.
Arsenal declared on their official website today that "Gervinho will shortly join the Gunners, subject to a regulatory process." Earlier in the day, Arsene Wenger had shared during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur that Gervinho had joined the club on Thursday and was spending the week at Arsenal's training ground in London Colney.
The dynamic attacker can be deployed on the wing or more centrally and his dribbling, pace, eye for goal and spotting a pass are sure to endure him to the Gunners faithful. Gervinho has been in blistering form for French champions Lille in the last two years having grabbed 31 goals and 14 assists in 75 appearances and is a regular for his national team. While his international record is not too flattering, just 6 goals in 27 appearances, it is certain to improve once he starts playing more in a central striking position, currently occupied by one Didier Drogba.
Perhaps most crucially Gervinho brings a winning mentality to Arsenal Football Club, having secured a League and Cup double with Lille last season and will surely be seen by Arsenal fans as the man who can end their ridiculous 6 year trophy less run.
Arsenal have apparently beaten premiership rivals Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester City to his signature and his capture may prove to be the turn of the screw as Wenger seeks to install new artillery at the Armoury.
