Liverpool have completed the signing of Scottish International Charlie Adam for a fee believed to be in the region of 7 million pounds. The prolonged transfer pursuit finally comes to a close after the player completed his medical on 6th July and penned a deal on the subsequent day. The length of the contract is yet to be made official.
At 6 ft 1, the typically hefty midfielder may provide Liverpool with a rather interesting mix to complement their existing midfield. Having a great left foot, set piece ability, a good range of passing and an eye for goal, Adam possesses the repertoire expected of an Anfield superstar. His tenacity, loyalty and leadership may also serve the club in good stead and his possible link-up with aerial super-power Andy Carroll offers an interesting prospect.
Adam was pivotal in Blackpool's promotion to the premier league in 2010, and extremely influential in the team's run-in to avoid relegation, which unfortunately despite all their resilience they could not avoid. His 12 goals, some of them absolute scorchers, further added weight to his credentials as Blackpool's number one man.
A Glasgow Rangers academy product, he initially endured a stop-start time to his career kick-starting at the Ibrox. Initially loaned out to Ross County and St Mirren (where he duly impressed the Rangers coaching staff with some stunning individual performances), he broke in to the Rangers first team in 06-07 having a profitable season in terms of growth and learning. He scored a memorable free-kick in the old-firm derby toward the end of the season and also lit up the big European stage with strikes against Livorno, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa in the Uefa Cup. He was voted the club's Young Player of the Year at an end-of -year award ceremony.
He was initially snapped up by Blackpool on loan for a half-season in 08-09 and they secured his permanent services in a deal worth 500,000 pounds( a club transfer record) at season end. The 09-10 was his breakthrough season in the championship scoring 16 goals in the league alone catapulting the Seasiders' into a play-off position. In the play-off final at Wembley, he scored a superb free-kick en route to Blackpool's 3-2 victory over Cardiff city and ensured top-flight football at Bloomfield Road after a hiatus of 39 years.
His all-action performances in the Premier League earned him rave reviews from all quarters and brought him to the attention of Liverpool who pursued him from teeth to tail in January only to be vehemently denied by Blackpool; their star man being integral to their chances of survival.
Speaking to the club's official website Adam said, I am absolutely delighted to be here. It has been a long process but now I can't wait to get started and hopefully this will be a successful period in my career and in the club's history. Liverpool is a massive club with terrific players and a terrific manager. You have seen since the new manager came in the forward strides that have been made. Kenny has a terrific respect from players and people in the game. He is a wonderful manager and it's an honour to be able to say I'm going to be able to play for Liverpool."
"I see this as the perfect development for me to come here, play with such wonderful players and hopefully help the team to win trophies, because that's the most important thing. I'm delighted to be able to walk out on the same pitch as some of the players here. There are good players at the club, top, top players who I want to learn from. I want to become a better player and hopefully bring something to the team.
"Hopefully we can have a successful period because it's been missing now for a couple of years. At the end of the day you get judged on trophies and as a footballer you want to win as many as you can. This club has had a lot of success over the years, so let's get back to doing that."
"Since I've known about Liverpool's interest I've been looking at the website and obviously playing here last season, the passion of the supporters, they know what it means and they're there to support the team. That's what you want as a player, to know the fans will back you to the hilt through thick and thin."
"I tasted Anfield last year, scoring here was an unbelievable feeling and hopefully I've got many more days like that as a Liverpool player."
Adam becomes Dalglish's second summer signing following the arrival of the much-touted England Under twenty one international midfielder Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, as Kenny seeks to build a younger, hungrier more stalwart Liverpool team.
