Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Secretary General Lalit Bhanot and Director General VK Verma were arrested today by the Central Bureau of Investigation under charges of criminal conspiracy and cheating.
A statement issued by the CBI on Wednesday read as follows: "It is alleged that the accused officers abused their official position and entered into criminal conspiracy with a Switzerland-based company and other unknown persons to cheat the government in awarding contract to the said company for acquiring Timing, Scoring and Result System at exorbitant rates of Rs. 107 crore thereby causing huge loss to the government."
The CBI questioned the pair before taking them into custody and believe they have sufficient evidence to prosecute them.
Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee Chairman Mr. Suresh Kalmadi continues to be stay clear of the CBI's net till date, but it is rumoured that tightening the noose on Bhanot and Verma is likely to shed more light on the role Kalmadi played in the 107 crore Commonwealth Games scam.
It is also widely believed that the aforementioned project is just one of the many cases in which money is likely to have changed hands between government officials and private bodies. However, the delay in removing Kalmadi and his aides from their posts may have given them enough time to clear the money trail.
Suresh Kalmadi was sacked from his role as the OC Chairman a little over a month ago by the new Sports Minister Ajay Maken under the direction of the central government.
