2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee Chairman Mr. Suresh Kalmadi and the Secretary-General Dr. Lalit Bhanot were asked to vacate their posts today by new Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Ajay Maken. Jarnail Singh, the CEO of the Organizing Committee will take charge of all the remaining duties that need to be carried out by the OC.
Mr. Maken, cited that he was acting on the instructions of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in taking the decision to terminate the two senior officials from their posts, as the authority had declared that their presence was hindering the investigation of allegations into a massive corruption scandal.
How much of an impact the move really makes in the ongoing investigation remains to be seen, with it coming a ridiculous 3 months after the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games, the appointment of an existing member of the team as Kalmadi's replacement, not to mention the fact that Mr. Kalmadi would continue to hold the post as the head of the Indian Olympic Association.
The Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee has been under fire for a while now after news of misappropriation of funds during the Queen's Baton Relay in London started making the rounds in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. There were further allegations about incorrect pricing of routine products ranging from toilet rolls to air-conditioners, on which it is widely believed that a number of members involved in the Games have made quite a bundle at the expense of the Indian tax payer.
