Jamaican athlete Trecia Smith has been named as the winner of the David Dixon Award at the Closing Ceremony of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. The prestigious award recognises sporting excellence, combined with fair play and team spirit.

Smith, the 2005 triple jump world champion, performed superbly in winning her event at the Games to grab back-to-back Commonwealth titles.

Immediately after her event, Smith, a physiotherapist, joined the Jamaican medical team, working tirelessly across the remainder of the Games to help her teammates prepare for their competition.

The CGF established the David Dixon Award in memory of the man who served as its Honorary Secretary for 17 years, to honour the outstanding athlete at each Commonwealth Games.

The winner is chosen based by a panel on three criteria:

• performance at the Games
• fair play
• overall contribution to their team's participation at the Games.

The award rules stipulates that only one competitor per team can be nominated, and the judging panel consisted of CGF Vice President, HRH Tunku Imran, and a representative from each of the CGF's six regions, who cannot come from the country of any nominee.

CGF President, Mike Fennell presented the David Dixon Award to Smith at the closing ceremony. "Smith is a wonderful athlete who competed superbly in Melbourne and Delhi, and her selflessness and commitment to her team make her a great role model for all the athletes of the Commonwealth," said Mr Fennell.
