Middle distance experts Kenyan Nancy Langat and New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin completed a memorable Commonwealth Games double my repeating their 1500m performance in a thrilling 800m final today.

Indian Tintu Luka set a scorching early pace, to record a time of 57.49 sec in the first 400m. Cheered on by a fanatical home crowd, Luka looked on course for an incredible upset, but completely ran out of gas on the home stretch.

Langat had been reeling in the Indian over the last 200 meters and took the win in 2:00.01 seconds. Hamblin ran courageously to earn a silver medal in the 1500m a few days ago, and her effort today was just as brave. Her time was 2min 00.05s, just a hair behind the winner, and good enough to muscle her way through the field into second.

"I didn't know what would happen coming off the final bend," Hamblin said. "I thought the Indian would come back. I wasn't sure about the Kenyans. I fought all the way down the straight and got the silver."

Hamblin was ill after her qualifying race yesterday, and said she had suffered a touch of 'Delhi Belly'. "I was a little worried about that this morning, but you have to put it out of your mind and focus on the race. I just wanted to be calm and patient out there."
