Mark Casey, the ambitious lawn bowler from Gold Coast, Australia took some time out to do an exclusive interview with TheSportsCampus where he discussed the sport and his plans for the future.
Casey began bowling at the age of six but it was only in 1995 when he was thirteen years old that he began to take up the sport seriously after some early success. At national level Casey has bagged wins at the Australian Junior Singles, Pairs and Fours titles as well as the Australian Open Pairs title in 2009.
The Australian has won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2007 Asia Pacific Championships and a silver medal at the 2008 World Championships. He has also won a bronze medal at the Eight Nation Test Event held earlier this year in Delhi.Casey trains from anywhere between six to thirty hours a week and believes the Commonwealth Games are "going to be tough and a big challenge". He is also concerned about the natural factors that could go against him during his performance. He explained, "In our sport, the surfaces change a great deal. In India, the conditions are far different to what we play on in Australia, so that will be a great challenge."
Casey is eager to defend his title and is trying hard to win back-to-back gold medals. His real life sporting hero is Michael Jordan but his motivation comes from his wife Trhysa, however, he does not fail to mention the rest of his family who are also a driving force in his life.
When asked about what he loves about his sport Casey answered, "The opportunity to reach the highest level of representing your country is the biggest attraction. Along the way you meet many wonderful people who become lifelong friends."
Mark Casey will be heading to the Scottish Masters in November after competing in the Commonwealth Games and will later work towards the 2012 World Championships. But before that he is sure to take a break to spend some quality time with family and friends.
