Eminent sportspersons present at the function included former National Table Tennis champion and Arjuna Awardee Kamlesh Mehta, Praveen Thipsay (Chess Grand Master and former Commonwealth Chess champion), his wife Bhagyashree Thipsay (Woman Grand Master) and Adil Sumariwala (Arjuna Awardee, Athletics).
The baton then proceeded with the relay and culminated at the Mumbai University, where the last leg was run by National Basketball player Surbhi Mudgal. Earlier in the day, the baton also paid a visit to INS Viraat, the Indian Navy's flagship and its oldest aircraft carrier.
A state function was also organized at the Gateway of India, complete with fanfare where the baton was received by the State Chief Minister Mr. Ashok Chavan. He was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Chagan Bhujbal, the State Minister of Sports Mr. Suresh Shetty as well as the Union Minster of State for Information Technology, Mr. Gurudas Kamat.
The baton arrived in the city from Pune and made a symbolic sea route entry at the Karanje Naval jetty. The Mumbai leg marks the 77th day of the 100 day relay. It is scheduled to reach Vadodara in the neighbouring state of Gujarat on September 13 after paying a visit to the Union territory of Daman and Diu enroute.
