The CBZ Bank 2010 cricket awards paid special tribute to the leading cricketers of the day and honoured those who have played a significant role in administering and developing the sport in Zimbabwe during the 2009/10 season. The CBZ Bank Cricketer of the year awards is the prime award and the highest honour given to any cricketer during the last year.
Chigumbura is without a doubt a superb ambassador of the game of cricket in Zimbabwe and continues to display this by adhering to the "spirit of cricket" both on and off the field. The all-rounder is currently practising his trade for Northamptonshire in England.
"The last twelve months have been special for zimbabwe cricket and for my career, firstly getting a county contract and being appointed Zimbabwe national team captain and it without saying that I mention everyone who has helped me reach this point," said Chigumbura in a telephone interview minutes after receiving the news in England.
The keynote address by the guest of honour, legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara's stole the hearts of the crowd, overshadowing the absence of the man of the moment Elton Chigumbura. He charmed the multitude with inspiring experiences and well crafted words of encouragement for the Zimbabwean players.
Sharne Meyers walked away the Nicoz Diamond female cricketer of the year award while Zimbabwe A coach, Stephen Mangongo retained his award after being proclaimed the coach of the year.
Right-arm leg spinner Graeme Cremer scooped the CBZ Bank bowler of the year award while Vusimuzi Sibanda was awarded CBZ Bank batsman of the year honours.
Mountaineers claimed the franchise of the year award after winning the Stanbic Bank twenty20 as well as the Faithwear/ Metbank trophies. Tendai Chatara also from Mountaineers claimed the Interfin Bank rookie of the year and Zimnat most promising cricketer of the year awards.
Southern Rocks were voted the Castle Lager Best administered franchise while the Midlands province got the honours for the Advantage Flooring provincial association of the year.
