Another round of warm up fixtures took place last night with 5 of our 32 finalists participating. Samba Kings Brazil along with fellow CONMEBOL team Paraguay were the only two teams to win while Honduras and the two European teams Serbia and Greece failed to notch up a confidence boosting victory ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this month.

Zimbabwe 0 - 3 Brazil

julio_cesar.jpgBrazil defeated Zimbabwe 3-0 in a World Cup warm up match in Harare today. Lyon wing back Michael Bastos started things off in the 41st minute with a cracking free kick in the top left corner for the 5 time FIFA World Cup winners. The Samba Kings doubled their lead three minutes later through a right footer by Robinho assisted by a Maicon through ball. Galatasaray midfielder Elano put things beyond The Warriors with a cool finish in the box from a pass by Daniel Alves.

The match was marred with an injury scare for Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar who was hurt after a collision with Zimbabwean midfielder Ovidy Karuru in the 19th minute. Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was roped in to man the goal for the rest of the game. Brazilian Coach Dunga made good use of the friendly by trying out a number of possible players and combinations. Brazil plays Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam on 6th June in what will be their final World Cup warm up match.

Greece 0 - 2 Paraguay

Switzerland hosted a game between Greece and Paraguay that looked to be quite a close encounter on paper. But first half goals from Enrique Vera and Lucas Barrios sealed a 2-0 win for the Guaranies over the Greeks. Barrios has scored a goal in each of his first 3 games wearing a Paraguayan shirt after only recently receiving Paraguayan nationality. Paraguay and Greece will not play any more warm-up games and will travel straight to South Africa to compete and enthrall at the FIFA World Cup 2010. The Paraguayans kick start their campaign against Italy while Greece take on South Korea in the opener.

Azerbaijan 0 - 0 Honduras

One of the lowest ranked teams in the World Cup this year, Honduras took on Azerbaijan ranked 109 in the world in Austria to prepare for a tough road awaiting them in South Africa. Both teams failed to put a goal past each other but that didn't stop the tackles from flying around. 5 yellow cards and a sending off were a part of this rugged stalemate. Defender Sascha Yunisoglu of Azerbaijan got sent off with a dash over 15 minutes to go but Honduras failed to capitalize despite the man advantage. Honduras take on Romania in 3 days time in their last warm up before taking on Chile on the 16th of June in their World Cup opener.

Poland 0 - 0 Serbia

Serbia took on a Polish team in Austria that was undefeated in the 6 games coming into this clash. The Serbs on the other hand were coming off a harrowing 1 - 0 defeat against World Cup minnows New Zealand. This game saw little action and entertainment in the 5000 seater Kufstein Arena as the it ended without either side breaking the deadlock. A 58th ranked Polish team proved to be a tough task for Serbia, who have been touted by Pundits across the globe to surprise us this summer. The Serbs take on Cameroon in their final warm up game before heading to the World Cup.
