Top seeds Saina Nehwal and Tufik Hidayat to begin their Asia Badminton Championships campaign tomorrow

saina_nehwal.jpgIndia is all set to showcase a star studded field in the opening round of the Yonex-Sunrise Asia Badminton Championships 2010 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi on Wednesday. Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal, also the tournament's top seed, will face Porntip Buranaprasertsuk from Thailand in her first round encounter tomorrow. In the Men's singles event, top seed Taufiq Hidayat from Indonesia, will also be in action on Day 1, as he takes on Indra Mehata of Nepal. The Indian field on display tomorrow will also have top seeded mixed doubles pair, Jwala Gutta and Diju V face Wai Hong Wong and Hoi Wah Chau from Hong Kong.

The Yonex-Sunrise Asia Badminton Championships 2010 is being treated as a test event en-route to the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi scheduled for October later this year. The tournament, recognised as the most prestigious Asian badminton championship, features top shuttlers from 21 countries.

Today, on the final day of the qualifiers, China's Xuerui Li made her way to the main draw by defeating Vietnamese shuttler Phuong Nhi Phung Nguyen in straight sets of 21-13, 21-13. She now meets Hae Won Kang from Korea in the first round. In another match Xin Liu of China also progressed defeating Korea's Jin Ah Wi in straight sets of 21-15 21-8.

In the men's singles qualifiers Pakistan's Wajid Ali Chaudhry defeated Bangladesh's Anayet Ullah Khan in straight sets of 21-10, 21-11 to advance to the first round. Nepalese shuttler Indra Mehata defeated Annachary Nyyazgulyyev from Turkmenistan in straight sets of 21-4, 21-5.

In some key contests taking place tomorrow, India's Jishnu Sanyal and Jyotshna P will take on Korea's Sang Hoon Han and Ye Na Jang in the women's double event. In the women's singles event second seed Mi Zhou of Hong Kong will meet Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti.
