Asia's biggest badminton tournament, the Yonex-Sunrise Asia Badminton Championships 2010 commenced at the state-of-the-art Siri Fort Sports Complex in the national capital today. The week long premier Asian championship is also being considered as a test event en-route to the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi scheduled later in October this year.

On the first day of the qualifiers Indian shuttlers began on a dull note as Thulasi P.C and Gayatri Vartak could not make it to the main draw. The day started well though, with Thulasi defeating Sara Khan of Pakistan 21-9, 21-17. In the second Indian match of the day Gayatri Vartak made it past Chandrika De Silva of Sri Lanka in straight sets. Gayatri closed the match in her favour with a score of 21-17, 21-12 on the board.

Thulasi and Gayatri however failed to maintain their momentum in the second round of the qualifiers today. Thulasi lost her match to Chinese Taipei's Hsiao Ma Pai by a score of 8-21, 9-21. It was a similar story for Gayatri Vartak who went down to Xin Liu from China in straight sets of 21-12, 21-11.

Top shuttlers from 21 Asian countries are participating in the week long premier badminton tournament. The qualifiers for the championship end tomorrow and the first round of the commences from the 14th of April 2010.
