India's women advanced to the semi-finals of the Eight Nation Invitational Lawn Bowls Event being played at the state-of-art Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday after finishing 1st and 4th in the Triples and Singles events respectively. The ladies failed to make it to the last stage of the Pairs event after finishing 6th at the end of the Group stage of the competition. The Men meanwhile failed to cover themselves in glory coming in second from bottom in both the Singles and Pairs event and dead last in the Triples. The participating nations at this pre-Commonwealth Games Test event are England, Australia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Malaysia, South Africa and the hosts India.
Farazna Khan continued her great winning run defeating Donna McCloy of Northern Ireland in a tie-breaker with a score of 14-1, 7-8 in India's favour, giving India its first win of the day. Later in the third session Farazna defeated England's Amy Monkhouse in another tie breaker with a score of 7-11, 11-4.
Speaking on her performance Faranza Khan said, "It was tough match and I had to fight till the end. Donna & Amy both gave a good fight and games ended in a tie breaker. I am happy with my performance and I am looking forward for other matches."In the Women's Triples India's Tania Choudhury, Pinki and Rupa Rani Tirkey beat South Africa's Susan Nel, Susanna Steyn and Sylvia Burns in straight sets of 12-3, 10-8. The trio defeated Australia's Sharyn Renshaw, Claire Duke and Beth Quinlan by 14-2, 6-9 in a tie breaker finish.
Sunil Bahadur and Mahip Tirkey picked up the only win of the day for the hosts in the Men's event as they beat Neil Spiers and Darren Burnett of Scotland in straight sets of 8-6, 5-5 in the Pairs category.
India's coach Richard Gale said, "I am satisfied with teams performance, the team is young and lack experience as compared to other participating nations. The facility available here to players will help India go a long way in Lawn Bowls."
