Six Indian pugilists struck gold at the finals of the Commonwealth Boxing Championships today with Olympic medallist Vijender Singh leading the pack. The tournament being played at the Talkatora Indoor Boxing Stadium today experienced one of the best performances by Indian pugilists in recent times.

The first Indian bout was in the Super Heavyweight 91+ kg category where Parmjeet Samota put on a brilliant show against his Kiwi opponent Joseph Parker. Samota coasted to a 7:3 win to seal his name on the gold medal.

The second gold for India came in quick succession in the Light Flyweight 49 kg category where Amandeep defeated Kenyan Peter Mungai 3:0. "This gold medal is definitely a great boost to my preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi," said an elated Amandeep after his bout.

Suranjoy Singh was in a fiery mood today as he outclassed his opponent Oliver Lavigi from Mauritius in the first round of the Flyweight 52kg. The referee had to stop the contest in the first round with nearly 90 seconds to spare as Suranjoy sealed his name on the gold medal. Suranjoy's bout was followed by Jai Bhagwan's bout in the Lightweight 60 kg category. Jai defeated Valention Knowles of Bahamas 6:2 to win the gold.

The most awaited bout of the day was of Vijender Singh in the middleweight 75 kg category where Vijender displayed his class as he confidently finished the bout with a score of 13:3. Vijender was facing Frank Buglioni of England. In the first round Vijender had to consult the doctor as his nose started bleeding, after a punch from Buglioni. Vijender was lucky as his bleeding stopped, but what came thereafter from him to Buglioni was a delight for every single spectator in the stadium. Vijender's strong reflexes were coupled with punches that were accurate enough to land on the scoring zone resulting in Buglioni lagging by 10 points at the close of the bout.

"I feel extremely nice today, as after a long time I have won a gold medal. The fact that this gold happened in front of such a supportive crowd makes this moment all the more special," said Vijender after his win.

The day started with the Bantamweight 56 kg category where English boxer Ian Weaver defeated Sri Lankan boxer MDK Wanniarachchi 7:1. The second fight was in the Light Welterweight 64 kg where another Englishman Scott Cardle got a walkover from Chirs Jenkins of Wales. In the Welterweight 69 kg category Fred Evans of Wales defeated Moabi Mothiba of Botswana 5:2.
