Hey football fanatics, welcome to a wrap of Deadline Day.
Winter shopping is now well and truly over across Europe, and there was to be some late drama on D-Day with Robbie Keane literally running out of Tottenham's training ground when the window in England shut at 5pm, across the border to Glasgow where he was snapped up on loan by Celtic, where the window was open till midnight. An interesting decision by Spurs, showing more than a little faith in Roman Pavlyuchenko and new loan signing veteran Eidur Gudjohnsen. I wonder though which of the aforementioned two will get called off the bench first for a 7 minute run at the end of games!
Moments before the Keane drama started, Adam Johnson's move from Middlesbrough to Manchester City for a reported initial fee of £6 million had barely gone through, just in the nick of time, making the young winger the most expensive signing of the winter. Shows just how bad times are in England this season. Portsmouth have managed to raise a little more cash, selling talented 22-year old goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to Stoke for a fee rumoured to be £3.25 million. They've lost their best defender and a great young goalie, they look odds on favourites to go down, and with the squad that's now left, will struggle to find their way back up.
A rumour about a £20 million move for Argentine international Fernando Gago from Real Madrid to Manchester City looked to be on the cards for most of the evening, but apparently fell through at the last moment. Some reports indicate an inability to agree personal terms, others state it was all balderdash from the start with Gago nowhere near City for a medical, so what transfer!
It had otherwise been a really, really slow day, with the top stories involving Nicky Shorey, Benni McCarthy and Alan Hutton in England, and Mancini swapping his Milan colours in Europe. West Ham did some business too, having picked up the strikers they so desperately needed with Mido and Ilan now officially Londoners.
McDonald Mariga's move to Manchester City broke down earlier in the day when the Kenyan was reportedly refused a work permit by British authorities on grounds that his country is ranked outside the top 70. Sad but true, Inter Milan don't care and were quick to snap up the talented Parma midfielder.
There were also rumours of a Benjani move from Man City to Sunderland and Liverpool landing Vasilis Torosidis from Olympiacos. The former has materialized late due to 'technical difficulties'. Benjani will be on loan with Sunderland till the end of the season, at which time the Zimbabwean striker will be a free agent. Torosidis, however, appears to have been nothing more than a rumour...
Famous non-movers - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Kleber (not going to Porto), Ryan Babel, Jeremy Menez, Alessio Cerci, Gaetano D'Agostino, Cicinho, Mathieu Flamini, Stephen Hunt (£5 million offer rejected), Daniele de Rossi, James Beattie, David James, Jason Roberts, James Vaughan, Roman Pavlyuchenko, ...
