The arrival of the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi in Uganda trained the spotlight on 2005 World and 2006 Commonwealth Games women's 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru.
Uganda's Minister for Sports Mr Charles Bakkabulindi, who received the baton at the Entebbe Internationa Airport on Wednesday, handed it to her and said he hoped she will win another gold in the XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year. Uganda's first world champion has made a comeback to competitive athletics after taking two years off.
Mr. Bakkabulindi, Dorcus Inzikuru, Entebbe Mayor Mr Kabuye Stephen, First Secretary of the High Commission of India to Uganda Mr KN Mohanakumaran as well as Commonwealth Games Uganda Vice President Mr Tumwine William and Secretary General Ms Peninnah Kabenge and mediapersons were at the airport despite the flight from Dar Es Salaam being delayed by three hours.
The baton was driven to Kampala Sheraton where a dance troupe performed special numbers in its honour.
Commonwealth Games Uganda Sport for All Commission member Mr. John Bosco Bananuka said they hoped to reach many different groups of people and give them a chance to touch the baton. "We want to try and make sure that the baton reaches all corners of the country," he said.
On Thursday, the baton will visit the Equator, the Naggalabi Coronation site, Suubi Watoto Village, Kasubi Tombs, Mildmay Centre and the Indian High Commission before it joins the revellers at Club Silk, Ange Noir and the Sheraton.
