The Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi's sustained its progress through wonderful Africa, reaching Tanzania on Monday to a colourful reception. It will be introduced to President Mr Jayaka Kikwete on Tuesday.
Tanzanian Commonwealth Games Council President Mr. Gulam Rashid and Secretary General Mr. Filbert Bayi, who won the Commonwealth Games 1500m gold medal in 1974, received the baton at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in the presence of Counselor and Head of Chancery in the High Commission of India in Tanzania Mr. N J Gangte.
Bayi said the Queen's Baton Relay, one of the greatest traditions of the Games, symbolises the unity of people from across the Commonwealth countries in the name of diversity, shar ed history and personal achievement." The baton has now completed 24,582km of its travel in international sectors.
High Commissioner of India in Tanzania Mr Kocheril V Bhagirath has personally ensured that everything is in order during the baton's visit to this nation. On Tuesday, the baton is scheduled to a part of a spectacular relay of about 200 Batonbearers. President Mr Jayaka Kikwete and his cabinet are likely to greet the baton in a grand ceremony here.
