As many as 30 different groups, including government, corporates, local communities, sporting bodies, Gambia Airlines, Central Bank of Gambia and National Road Authority took part in the relay.

The baton arrived here on its four-day journey in The Gambia from Freetown in Sierra Leone on Friday. It was received at the airport by officials of the G ambian Commonwealth Games Council and Counsel of India Mr Arun Kumar Jain. Gambia National Olympic Committee Executive Director Mr. George Gomez saw the relay as an opportunity for The Gambia to showcase its tourism and the country at large.

On Saturday, the Baton will participate in activities of the companies sponsoring the relay in The Gambia and is expected to be at events organised by schools on Sunday. And on Monday, the baton will travel as far as the whole of the western region before proceeding to the Banjul International Airport to fly to Accra in Ghana for its next stop in Africa.

The Baton's trip to Sierra Leone was made memorable when a group of visually impaired athletes carried it in a relay.

The Baton has now completed 16714 km in the international travel component since the launch at the Buckingham Palace on October 29.
