CWG Update: Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi soaks in ancient Cypriot history

qbr_cyprus2.jpgThe Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi, which combines rich Indian heritage with modern technology, spent much time on Friday in the ancient towns of Paphos, Limassol and Kourion, spreading goodwill and creating awareness about the XIX Commonwealth Games to be staged in Delhi 10 months from now.

In the south western coastal town of Paphos, four Batonbearers and five other runners relayed the baton from the Castle Square near the harbour to the Town Hall where the Mayor Mr. Savvas Vergas celebrated the arrival of the baton for the first time in his town and wished Delhi every success in organising the Commonwealth Games.

Before it visited the medieval Paphos Castle, which is one of the four castles in the Republic of C yprus and has been a witness to some amazing history, Cypriot Olympic swimmer Stavros Michaelides thanked the Mayor for hosting the event and hoped that Cyprus will be successfully represented at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

A number of school children were present as the Mayor spoke and honoured all guests, including Commonwealth Games Federation Vice President Mr. Ian Emmerson with Paphos plaques and bouquets.

The baton then visited Kourion archaeological site and Sanctuary of Apollo for a number of photo opportunities, capturing some of Cyrpus's history. The trip the amphitheatre and a date with the Kourion Mosaics was special.

In the southern coastal town of Limassol, four Batonbearers and 10 local runners relayed the baton through the streets to the Town Hall were the Mayor Mr. Andreas Christou greeted it. The baton then returned to Nicosia for a brief function the Cyprus Olympic Committee, which is the Commonwealth Games Association for the island.

On Saturday, the baton will travel 1689km to Malta, its final stop on the European leg of its journey around the Commonwealth.
