The Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi's tryst with Cyprus on Thursday was marked by a relay on bicycles, a mini bus ride and a drive in a classic car as it visited Larnaca, Agia Napa, Paralmini and Deryneia before coming here for a reception by Mayor Mr. Eleni Mavrou in the presence of the Indian High Commissioner, Mr. Ashok Kumar.
The day started on the Mediterranean port city of Larnaca where a short relay with six Batonbearers was held on the streets. Mayor of Larnaca Mr. Andreas Moiseos received the baton. A representative from the Indian High Commission Mr. Krishan Lal attended the reception.
The baton then travelled for 45 minutes by mini bus to the resort town of Agia Napa where three Cypriot cyclists, five cl assic cars and school children received it. The cyclists then rode with the baton for 10 km to Paralamini. Since it started raining, the baton cover was put on and it was driven in a classic car into Paralamini.
Two Cypriot athletes who have participated in Commonwealth and Olympic Games ran into the city centre with the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi and were met by the Mayor. The baton then travelled to Deryneia for a relay through the streets with six Batonbearers followed by a brief reception by Mayor Mr. Antreas Shiapanis.
The baton then traveled inland to attend a relay through Nicosia, which is by the banks of River Pedieos, with eight Batonbearers to be met and greeted by the Mayor Mr. Eleni Mavrou at the Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre.
