queens_baton_relay_glasgow.jpgScotland's largest city, which hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2014, got a feel of the festivities when the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi was part of the celebrations during its visit here on Sunday.

Glasgow's Lord Provost Bob Winter, who carried the baton down the steps of Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall at the start of a relay, said the Queen's Baton Relay was the closest connection many Glaswegians would have with the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. "They would be watching it on television or reading about it in the media - so we wanted to make sure that as many people as possible were able to support the baton's visit and be part of the its exciting journey around the Commonwe alth," he said.

After formal speeches by Scotland Commonwealth Games Association Chairman Mr. Michael Cavanagh, Commonwealth Games Vice-President Mr. Ian Emmerson and Mr Winter, the relay went from the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with scores of Batonbearers, security runners, officials, athletes, sponsors and members of the community through the shopping centre to the Gallery of Modern Art.

Earlier in the day, the baton visited some iconic sites, including Armadillio (Clyde Auditorium), Riverside, Bells Bridge/Broomielaw and Squinty Bridge. It also visited Central Mosque, the Glasgow Hindu Mandir and Central Gurdwara, with officials from the Indian Consulate attending.

The baton also travelled to Kelvingrove, the venue for the Lawn Bowls event for the 2014 Games. Scotland athletes Yvonne Murray and Adam Cox were in attendance.

Later, the baton attended the Shindig at Winterfest in George Square and led the Light Parade from George Square to St Andrews before finishing the day at a reception in the Thistle Club where athletes, officials and others who represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Games were present.
