CWG Update: Queen's Baton meets Jenson Button!

baton_meets_button.jpgMinister for Sport Mr. Edwin Reyes led a party of VIPs welcoming the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi at airside on arrival at the Gibraltar airport on Wednesday evening. Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association President Mr. Charlie Flower his colleagues were also present as the peninsula became the seventh nation to which the baton has been to since starting its journey from Buckingham Palace on October 29.

On Thursday, Mr Reyes will launch a relay by Commonwealth Games athletes and schoolchildren from Victoria Stadium to John Mackintosh Square where the Mayor of Gibraltar Ms. Olga Zammit will receive the baton and address a select gathering. The baton will then be at a lunch hosted by Gibraltar GGA P resident Mr Flower. In the evening, there will a reception hosted by the Mayor in City Hall.

On Friday, the baton will visit some schools before being displayed at the John Mackintosh Square, which is just off Gibraltar's Main Street between the Parliament building and the City Hall. It will also visit the Convent to meet Gibraltar's Governor Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns followed by a trip to the world famous Rock of Gibraltar.

On Wednesday, Formula One 2009 champion Jenson Button made the Queen's Baton 2010 Delhi's departure from Guernsey memorable by being on the same flight to Gatwick airport in London en route Gibraltar and willingly posing with the baton. He displayed a great deal of curiosity about the baton and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year.

Commonwealth Games Federation Regional Vice President Ian Emmerson met the baton at Heathrow airport and will be travelling with the baton until Malta.
