Top seeds Julia Coin and Sania Mirza worked their way through the draw to advance in contrasting fashion to the quarterfinals of the ITF Lexington Challenger, Kentucky, USA.
Julie Coin, ranked 63rd in the world, had it easy against American Kimberly Couts, barely taking an hour to beat the 20-year old 6-1, 6-2. Mirza meanwhile was made to work much harder by Ukranian Tetiana Luzhanska, but managed to scrape through without the need of a third set, 6-4, 7-6.
Coin will next face 24-year old American Ahsha Rolle, who needed two tight tiebreaks to upset 7th seed Yulia Fedosovva 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7). Rolle is playing some really good tennis, but is unlucky to run into Coin as early as the Quarterfinals.
At the bottom end of the draw, Sania Mirza will take on another American Lindsay Lee-Waters, who also pulled off an upset win over 5th seed Valerie Tetreault of Canada. The scoreline was a rather comfortable 6-4, 6-3 for the 32-year old veteran.
Lindsay, current ranked 193 in the world, has a career high rank of 33 way back in April 1996, when as a teenager, she was setting the tour on fire. Now settled in Georgia, Lindsay has an 8-year old daughter and is coached by husband Heath at their own Ace Tennis Academy in Atlanta.
Another quarterfinalist trying to climb her way back up is Lilia Osterloh, No. 41 in the world in '01. The year before she reached the 4th round of both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and knocked off Mary Pierce - ranked No. 5 at the time - in Tokyo in three sets.
Osterloh, who had to win twice yesterday, was beaming after her first-round 6-4, 6-4 upset of eighth-seeded Aiko Nakamura of Japan.
