venus_williams_2.jpgThe Siblings - an ode to the Williams sisters

They stood tall on opposite sides of
the criss-cross mesh of netting, the half-way mark
The divider separating the siblings
On this glorious, sunny Saturday in July
Both skilled in their craft
Both so feminine even in their sports attire -
Designer whites
Danglers in their ears,
blending with the image of each
One all sinew, lithe and purposeful
The other well rounded, agile, bubbly
Each emerging best on her own side of the draw.

This then was the dilemma,
Who was the best of the best?
Who would be Fortune's favourite on the Day?
Not quite twins, but near enoughTwo years separated them,
Was the elder wiser too
More experienced, more
alert to nuances of facial expression and body language
or did the advantage lie with the more youthful
Was she more energetic, hungrier?

serena_williams.jpgThey were both here for reclamation, for redemption
To reclaim what they had earned after years of sweat and toil
The ultimate reward
Father Williams both parent and coach withdrew saying his job was done
He would not be there to witness Sister Act IV live, but
Surely he would be glued to a TV screen somewhere
Like the rest of us enthusiasts
Was it as some said that he could not bear to watch?

Mother and the rest of the camp, bravely sat on the sidelines
Giving support,
But to whom?
Could the mother who bore them, nine months apiece
read the pain, the anguish in the eyes of one
And still cheer the other who deserved the applause?
Could she sit pokerfaced and present a face devoid of emotion
And not betray the turmoil within.
Dark glasses and hat helped avoid the piercing eyes of the media
Probing, seeking signs of nervousness or a give-away expression.
The siblings studiously avoided making eye contact.
Focusing strictly on the ball and the power with which they would strike it
Rather like Arjuna saying he could see naught but the eye of the bird
Who would falter in this contest?
Only the game would tell.
