Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker Michael Owen must be feeling like the luckiest man in the world today. After spending four years warming the physios table at St. James' Park, a dismal spell which saw him make just 71 appearances and net 26 goals, Owen has been given a career lifeline by Manchester United's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
After a final season with Newcastle ended with the club getting relegated, once England's hottest property Michael Owen was reportedly facing salary cuts or a period in the wilderness, despite being available as a free transfer. In what will surely go down in history as either another Fergie masterstroke (remember Laurent Blanc and Henrik Larsson) or career suicide, Owen's shock move to once bitter rivals Manchester United is one met with a lot of scepticism by United fans, desperate to replace their top two premier league scorers Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, both having decided their future lay away from Old Trafford.
Speaking at the occasion, Sir Alex Ferguson said, "Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question. Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."
Owen added, "I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought."
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands. I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here. I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one."
"I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."
