Sania Mirza continued to enjoy the lush green grass at the AEGON Classic in Birmingham as she pulled off her second upset of the week, beating the no. 5 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenko of Russia in three close fought sets 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the Quarter-finals.
The first set saw t he women trade a couple of breaks of serve each, before it found its way into the tie-break. Mirza dominated the breaker, taking it 7 points to 3.
World no. 27 Pavlyuchenko fought back in the second set, breaking the Mirza serve twice, as the Indian's first serve percentage plummeted to a match low 38%.
Sania did well to put her disappointing 2nd set performance behind her as she ripped into the Pavlyuchenko serve in the third set breaking twice, and winning a commanding 17of 25 points on it to seal the victory in exactly two hours of play.
The result was more than a little unfortunate for the Russian superstar, who was playing her second match of the day, having taken two and a half hours to beat Britain's Elena Baltacha 6-7 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (3) in delayed 2nd round action.
In the Quarters Sania will take on Melinda Czink, ranked 62 in the world and seeded 16th here. Czink upset 3rd seed Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada in another tight match 6-7 (7), 7-5, 7-5.
Also advancing to the quarter finals was sentimental favourite Maria Sharapova. The Russian star beat no. 7 seed Francesca Schiavone in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. She will next play Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium for a place in the Semi-finals.
