Ricky Ponting and his family have been long time supporters of the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia and in 2008 they launched the Ponting Foundation to expand their work around childhood cancer.
On May 19th Ponting announced a major fund raising initiative which would directly involve him in what he does best - play cricket - with all proceeds going to support children affected by cancer. This gives him more reason than ever before to score runs in plenty in the nPower Ashes series 2009 in England.
His wife Rianna and beautiful nine month old baby Emmy joined Ponting at the launch of ‘Run Ricky Run' and 400 primary school children at Sacred Heart Mosman in Sydney where he called on all fellow Aussies to consi der sponsoring him for the number of runs he will score in the Ashes Tests.
"Every run I score in the Ashes Tests will trigger a donation to one of the Foundation's beneficiaries and 100% of the proceeds raised will be distributed."
Obviously passionate about the cause, what he calls ‘fantastic', Ponting said, "Children are our future and we have to do everything we can to win the battle against childhood cancer." He added that the work of the Foundation had become more significant for him and his wife after Emmy their little girl was born. Having a beautiful healthy child of their own has served to increase their determination and resolve to support children and families who are less fortunate than them.
Project ‘Run Ricky Run' with rollout over the next six weeks leading up to the Cardiff test beginning on 8th July. It will be promoted by Cricket Australia as part of its Cricket Cares program.
We at TheSportsCampus.com applaud Ricky Ponting's initiative and hope it is a run-away success.
