us_open_tom_mascardo_ss.jpgRoger Federer, the Williams sisters and Ana Ivanovic all booked their place into Round 2 of the US Open posting contrasting wins.

Four time champion Federer, seeded 2nd in a Grand Slam after eons, made light work of Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina, easily winning 6-3, 6-0, 6-3. Also advancing as per the form book in the Men's draw were Ivo Karlovic, Tommy Robredo, Igor Andreev, Olympic silver medalist Fernando Gonzalez, Andreas Sippi, Paul-Henri Mathieu and Fernando Verdasco.

There were however two upsets as the 22nd seed Tomas Berdych was annihilated by 20-year- old giant Sam Querrey (he's 6'6") in under an hour and a half 6-3, 6-1, 6-2. Also on the flight home was talented Frenchman Richa rd Gasquet (seeded 12th), as he lost a close five setter to German veteran Tommy Haas 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. The match, a 3 hour 40 minute battle royale saw many long rallies as the two baseliners slugged it out in four closely fought sets. Regrettably Gasquet who continues to falter in long matches (remember his amazing five setter with Andy Murray at Wimbledon) ran out of gas against his much older opponent as he just didn't put up a fight in the 5th set losing it in just 29 minutes.

The other highlight of Day 2 was Marat Safin's five set thriller with journeyman Vincent Spadea. The former champion won the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Safin as always will be a dangerous floater in the draw and will next face 15th seed Tommy Robredo in the 2nd round.

In the Women's singles, top seed Ana Ivanovic was made to work hard against Vera Dushevina of Russia. The French Open champion did it the hard way beating Dushevina 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in just over two hours. The Williams sisters in contrast won their first rounds quite easily as did Olympic silver medalist Dinara Safina.

The one upset of the day was Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld beating the number 12 seed, Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets.

French favourite Amelie Mauresmo did just enough to book her place in the next round edging out compatriot Nathalie Dechy 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Mauresmo well past her best had the crowd behind her the entire match and will need more than a little help from her friends if she is to make it to week 2 of the Open.

In action on Day 3 will be American favourite Andy Roddick, no. 3 seed Novak Djokovic, women's 2nd seed Jelena Jankovic, former champion Lindsay Davenport and Olympic champion Elena Dementieva.
