Indian Weightlifting caught in Dope Scandal again

E-mail Print
Indian weightlifting could face a ban for up to five years as the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed on Friday that two of its lifters had tested positive for a banned substance. The CGF Medical Commission will now refer the case to Court of Arbitration for Sport who if satisfied by the report, may slap a ban on the Indian Weightlifting Federation.

According to the rules of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), any country that returns three or more positive tests in a year is banned from all competitions for 12 months and/or is fined. But action against India could be stricter considering its their second offence coming close on the back of their 2004 ban. The fine is expected go as high as $50,000 and a ban would mean Indian weightlifters will be absent from the Asian Games in Doha in December this year.

India's 2004 ban came as a result of Pratima Ku

It was a mixed day for India at the Commonwealth Games on Friday as Gagan Narang won his fourth gold while hot favourite Samaresh Jung lost out in a shootout to take the bronze. India's Arti Singh Rao also disappointed as she ended in 6th place in the Women's Skeet.

22-year old Narang kept a 100 percent record of four gold medals in four events as the Hyderabad lad took gold in the 10m air rifle individual and pairs and in the 50m rifle 3-position individual and pairs. His pairs golds came in partnership with Abhinav Bindra, who also has a tally of 4 medals: two gold from pairs, a bronze in the 10m air rifle and a silver medal in the men's 50m rifle 3-position.

"This is really a dream come true," said Narang. "I knew we had a great chance in air rifle but the men's 50m rifle 3-position is a new event for me. Winning the pairs was great, but adding the individual gold is just

The Indian shooting contingent had a good medals haul here at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The shooters ended Wednesday richer by three golds courtesy Anuja Jung, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Vijay Kumar.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won the first gold of the day for India. Having won the silver in the Double Trap Pairs event earlier, Rathore followed it up with a superb performance in a nail biting final of the Men's Double Trap event. Shooting 181 out of 200, Rathore prevailed over the competition at the Lillydale Trap Range. He beat South Africa's Byron Swanton (180) and Malta's William Chetcuti (179) to the second and third positions. Olympic silver medalist Rathore's win shows his remarkable success with a weapon he switched to late last year.

"It was a tense battle and the shooters in the field were world class," Rathore said, after successfully defending the go

India's Seema Antil of India bagged a silver medal in the women's discus throw at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Tuesday. Two other Indian throwers, Krishna Poonia (58.65m) and Harwant Kaur (57.64m), finished in fifth and seventh place, respectively.

Seema Antil is one of the country's leading throwers and had won the world junior gold in Santiago in 2000. However as a result of a failed dope test, her medal was stripped away. The athlete said that she had mistakenly taken a curative for the common cold that contained a banned substance and was let off lightly.

Discus was not Antils first choice, as she turned to it after having a try at both the hurdles and the long jump. She found her forte in the discus throw event and was one of the only two throwers here to go over 60 metres in the qualification round. South African Elizna Naude, the champion achieved a best of 6
